The absurdity of this, of course, is that the events which they fear most – meeting new people, going to new events, speaking up in public – do not call for the tremendous spurt of strength or speed that the stress response gives them. So they simply end these events, stewing in their own chemical juices that have been released in response to what they perceive to be a threat.

Researchers in the United Kingdom evaluated ten studies of men and women enrolled in the Health Survey for England from 1994 to 2004. The data (published in the British Medical Journal), which involved more than 68,000 adults aged 35 or older, not only showed an association between psychological distress and mortality, but also shown that even mild anxiety or depression raised the overall risk of death from any cause by 29%. The risk of death specifically from cardiologic disease increased by 29%. So even the mild but chronically anxious were putting them at risk for serious consequences.

Therefore, it's worth to notice how often you feel attacked by paper tigers.

How to Detect Cancer in Your Heart

Heart cancer (primary cardiac tumor) is cancer that arises in the heart. Primary cancers of the heart, in which the cancer starts and develops in the heart, are very rare. Although still rare, most cancers found in the heart have come from elsewhere in the body. These include lymphomas that originate in the chest near the heart. Other cancers that can spread to the heart include melanomas and sarcomas. Another rare type of cancer known as carcinoid tumor produces hormones that can damage cardiac valves.

Cardiac cancers can develop from any part of the heart. When these cells become cancerous, they multiply and create irregular blood vessels that can bulge into the atrium and spread to adjacent structures. These tumors originate from muscle cells that have become cancerous.

The most common primary cardiac tumor is the myxoma. Myxomas have their origin in connective tissue. A cardiac myxoma may create an extra heart sound, and it can often be detected in an echo cardiogram. Most primary cardiac tumors are rare to metastasize and spread; as such they are often called benign. These tumors can obstruct the heart's flow as well as disrupt its electrical system, which can lead to sudden death.

The cause of cardiac cancer is not known. As with any cancer, changes occur inside the cells, which lead to alteration of their function and uncontrollable growth. These types of changes can occur in any of the cardiac cells. Cardiac cancer is fairly rare, as the muscle cells of the heart do not typically form cancers. Diagnosis Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

However, accidental discovery of aneurysm from an abdominal scan or X-ray, sometimes make early intervention possible, saving lives. A whooshing sound, called bruit, resulting from blood rushing by the bulge in the artery can be picked up by the stethoscope, when the doctor listens to the sounds from the mid abdominal area. It is difficult to detect abdominal aneurysm in obese people through physical examination.

Ultrasonography can give a better diagnosis of aneurysms in the abdomen and it can track their progress over a period of time. CT scan of the abdomen, with the injection of radio opaque dye, gives a very clear picture of the aneurysm but the high levels of radiation involved is a cause of concern. On the other hand, MRI scan does not have any risk of radiation but availability may be a problem.

Treatment Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Smaller aneurysms do not pose any risk of rupture, and people are treated with blood pressure lowering drugs only. They are advised to discontinue tobacco usage, which is known to aggravate aneurysms. Aneurysms less than 2 inches wide are tracked at regular intervals to watch their progress.

To prevent the rupture of aneurysms larger than 2 inches wide, surgical repair is attempted, unless the patient is not in a condition to withstand the surgery which may take 3 to 6 hours. There are two methods; both involve grafts. In the traditional method, a large vertical incision, extending from below the sternum to a point beyond the navel, is made. The graft is first stitched on to the aorta with the walls of the aneurysm wrapped around the graft. It is a long surgery extending up to 6 hours and is done under general anesthesia. More than a week of hospitalization also may be required.

Endovascular stent grafting is a newer, less invasive surgery, usually performed under epidural anesthesia which numbs the person from waist down. A guide wire is inserted through small cut in the groin and threaded up the femoral artery and into the aorta, to reach the location of the aneurysm. It is followed by a catheter with a stent graft which is guided to the location of the aneurysm and fixed inside it. The stent is a small collapsible tube made of a mesh and on reaching the site; it is opened up to fit the inside of the aorta very snugly, providing strength and support to the wall of the aorta. Usually, 2 to 5 hours are taken to complete the surgery and hospital stay is reduced to less than a week. The fatality from surgery is about 2 to 5%, but considering the almost cent percent risk of death from ruptured aneurysm; this may be a risk worth taking.

Immediate surgical intervention, either through open surgery or by endovascular stent graft, is necessary to handle an abdominal aortic aneurysm that has already ruptured or is on the verge of rupture. There is a risk of death of 50% during the surgical repair of a ruptured aneurysm; endovascular stent graft placement reduces it by almost half. There is a high probability of shock developing due to excessive blood loss; it can cause kidney failure, in which case, the prognosis becomes extremely poor. Fatality is 100%, if ruptured aneurysm is left untreated.

Natural Ways to Fight Heart Disease – Debunking Myths and Finding New, Better Ways

We have been thinking for decades that Omega 3, largely taken as fish oil supplements, would fight cholesterol and help us maintain a very healthy cardiovascular system. But Omega 3 supplements have been backed by mixed evidence laately with regards to its benefits to heart health; do not throw them away, because, because they are still considered very beneficial for your overall health (including your mental health) and, maybe, the quality of your blood flow. I therefore do not discount it, in fact I am still using this supplement daily for overall health, preferably from 'Krill'; to avoid ingesting mercury, use Omega 3 with a specific guarantee of distillation (stripped of mercury) or, as stated, Krill supplements.

In the past Omega 6 supplements were mixed with Omega 3 ones and sold on their own 'benefits'. However, with a few set of exceptions, Omega 6 supplements are now being considered as the type of oil to avoid, at least in large quantities; they seem to promote inflammation of the treaties, though of course it's early days (but why take the risk?). Ironically, years ago, when I was ingesting Omega 6 supplements, I felt that my rheumatoid arthritis would worsen rapidly; at the time there was no real information on this but I tend to 'listen to my own body' above everything else (something I would advise anyone to learn to do). I would there recommend recommend avoiding supplements with Omega 6 and stick to Omega 3 (at least, this is my personal advice based on the latest studies). However, the one oil you can continue to consume without any concern is Extra Virgin Olive Oil, cold pressed, ideally from a reputable source and organic (but it's expensive so at least to buy any extra virgin kind). Any other oil or margarine (or butter) must be avoided.

Research has also promoted to the top natural ways to help your cardiovascular health, some of them seriously overlooked in the last few years; the following are 3 of them:

1 – Eating large amounts of fresh organic garlic (if you can) for its cholesterol-lowering benefits, its pressure-lowering benefits and its overall 'cleansing' properties. Buy organic garlic, cut some finely, let it sit for a few minutes to allow the powerful 'allicin' to come through, and then use it to dress your dishes, such as your home-made hummus (my favorite way to eat fresh garlic ). You can also add it (mixed with extra virgin olive oil, raw, not cooked nor heating up) to your home-made pizza or your regular pizza (but read on about white carbohydrates). Another way is to add it to your wholegrain pasta dishes, or your mash potatoes, or in any dish where raw garlic is suitable, such as bruschetta.

2 – Decreasing the amount of WHITE carbohydrates (whole grains are fine): so avoid white base pizza, white pasta, white rice, white bread, cookies and anything made with white (enriched) flower; consume only whole-grain carbohydrates. Also, avoid sugar, artificial sweeteners and stick to stevia and to naturally-made granulated honey (not refined honey, which is as bad as sugar). Diabetes is very detrimental to your overall cardiovascular health. Moreover, white carbs and sugar (as well as artificial sweeteners) carry a large number of detrimental effects on your body.

3 – Consuming freshly squeezed lemon juice with spring (not tap) water multiple times a day – tap water is fine if it's directly from a spring, like, for example, in some mountain springs areas. Research has shown that fresh lemon juice (without sugar!) In your glass of water (many times a day) helps 'cleanse' the arteries.

The heart is an incredible organ. Its sole function throughout life is to keep pumping blood to the different parts of the body and various organs, purify it and then pump again. Considering all the work that is being done, there is a lot of pressure on the heart. It is a well known fact that as a person gets older, the amount of strain on the heart increases, and beyond a point slowly the organ starts to slow down. It is not just old people, either. Anyone can have a sudden cardiac arrest at any point in their lives.
